In 1940 historic Camp Davis was built, which led to a population explosion that increased the town's numbers from 28 in 1940 to 110,000 in 1943. Camp Davis is known for having the first Barrage Balloon Training Center and the distinction of being the only Army post with anti-aircraft, seacoast defense, and barrage balloon all under one command. Camp Davis also was used by the Navy in 1946 as the base for "Operation Bumblebee," a secret guided missile testing program.
