Mini Golf History
Before we take our first putt, let's take a moment to learn a little bit about the history of mini-golf.
Mini golf originated in the late 1800s in St. Andrew's, Scotland, as a way for women to enjoy golf. During this period, women weren't allowed on traditional golf courses, and most men didn't want them on the smaller caddies' courses either. So, the women at the St. Andrews golf course were provided a much smaller, hilly course.
The women's league quickly grew to over 100 women, and they held mini-golf competitions to compete for prizes such as jewelry, opera glasses, and other fashionable items of the time. The small course consisted of nine holes and obstacles, including a bridge over a small stream. The game became wildly popular, quickly spreading across Europe before reaching the United States.
By the 1920s, mini-golf courses were beginning to pop up all over the United States. Then, by the late 1930s, there were around 50,000 mini-golf courses nationwide. Since the courses didn't take up much space and could be constructed inside or outside, they were easy to build, relatively inexpensive compared to a traditional golf course, and fun to design.
Mini golf has stayed a fun pastime and is beloved by many today, especially on vacation.
